Readiness for Godly Play

It will vary from one child to the next when he/she will be ready to begin Godly Play. As a general guideline, if your child will be entering preschool in September for a 3-year-old class he/she will most likely be ready for Godly Play.

We attempt to keep children in groups that mirror their academic groupings. Typically, a child will begin and end a program year in the same class. This is not a hard and fast rule, just a general guideline. One of the goals of Godly Play and spiritual formation classes is to build community. The children need to feel secure in their setting and even take ownership of its upkeep. When a child is given the opportunity to spend an entire program year with one group of children and one set of teachers in the same space, important relationships are more naturally formed. On the flip side it is also important for children to have the opportunity to welcome new friends into their environments. So there will be some movement during the middle of the program year as we attempt to find the best fit for each child. However, we value maintaining as much continuity as possible for the mutual benefit of the children and teachers and for the integrity of the program.

The Godly Play teachers and classrooms are not as well equipped to handle diaper changing as is the St. Francis Kids class. It would be our preference to have children toilet-trained prior to participating in Godly Play, although this is not required.

Godly Play is as much about process (maybe even more so) as it is about content - at least in the early years. One of the most important things we learn in Godly Play is silence - a huge challenge for adults, let alone curious preschoolers! It will take time for all to be comfortable and “at home” in this different kind of classroom. It is hugely beneficial for your child to attend as often as possible.

“Are you ready?”

This is the question the doorperson who greets the children will ask each Sunday before they enter the classroom. This is the transition point, or the threshold, where goodbye is said and the children will cross into the sacred space of the classroom, a classroom that is specially designed for them to encounter the great mystery of God.
